Aircraft Loss of Control UPRT

Loss of Control - InFlight

Loss of Control In-Flight (LOCi) is by far the biggest cause of fatal accidents in aviation.

Being involved in a LOCi event is something that can happen with no warning whatsoever. Understanding “Startle & Surprise” and training for events that may call for counter-intuitive control inputs could be the difference in surviving.

By visiting this page you have taken the first steps to not only reduce your risk of becoming another LOCi statistic, and by completing this training, you will become a safer, confident, and more competent pilot.

Contrary to belief,
Upset Prevention & Recovery Training (UPRT) is NOT Aerobatics

WHY SHOULD I CONSIDER UPSET PREVENTION RECOVERY TRAINING (UPRT)?

The purpose of UPRT is to educate pilots on what they need to do should their aircraft’s state be outside pre-determined "normal" flight regimes.  This is technically referred to as a "Loss of Control In-Flight" or "LOCi".

If you think it cannot happen to you, then think again.

Well before Gustav Whitehead took flight, or the Wright Brothers launched on the sand dunes of Kittyhawk, LOCi remains today, the greatest killer of pilots and passengers across ALL types of aviation including heavy passenger jets and instructional flights.

The skills and knowledge you will obtain from this training will not only make you a better pilot by enhancing your understanding of the aircraft and how it moves through the air, but most importantly, give you the skills to be able to recover the aircraft from any attitude.

Strike Aviation Training provides “Basic UPRT” utilizing our 8KCAB Decathlon which is approved for intentional spinning.   We chose this aircraft as it has a flight performance envelope that allows most pilots to be able to quickly adapt to, unlike high performance aircraft such as the Extra 300.

NOT ALL AIRCRAFT “FEEL” THE SAME

Aerodynamic principals remain true for almost all aircraft types. A pilot can learn the theory of recovery from an unintentional upset, but it is much more important to understand that the “FEEL” and necessary control inputs required for a heavy GA aircraft compared to a Light Sport Aircraft (LSA) are completely different.

The Strike Aviation Training Difference

Here at Strike Aviation Training, we take LOCi very seriously.

So serious in-fact that since 2014, we have been invested in training our own dedicated UPRT Instruction team and created Australia’s first specialized Loss of Control (UPRT) training program applicable to Recreational and General Aviation pilots.

Strike Aviation Training
A LEADER IN COMBATING LOCi

In 2022, Strike Aviation Training and Flight Safety Solutions hosted Australia’s very first UPRT Conference. We invited any flight training provider with an interest in combatting LOCi to put aside their commercial interests to discuss the best way forward for the industry, in order to reduce loss of life and property. When it comes to developing what training needs to be done, our team are one of the “Go to” training providers for both the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) and Recreational Aviation Australia (RAAus).

The current guidance material from ICAO and other regulatory bodies worldwide are structured towards commercial airline training. Whilst many aerodynamic principles are the same, there remain differences due to weight, aircraft construction and handling characteristics. Our team have been researching the available documents, adapting the content to these specific aircraft types and are working to develop appropriate training to suit aircraft less than 5700Kg and in particular, Light Sport Aircraft (LSA) and ultralights.

Most importantly, ensuring current and future flight instructors understand this emerging information is pivotal to helping ensure student and experienced pilots have the correct and appropriate information and training. All Strike Aviation instructors are outstanding in their own right and amongst us all, we have a depth of experience from small single engine 2 Stroke ultralights, right through to Warbirds.  We are very proud of our dedicated training package specific to RAAus aircraft.

During your training you have the option of completing a CASA Part 61 Spinning Flight Activity Endorsement.    With the impending RAAus weight increase, Strike Aviation Training will be ready to deliver appropriate training for all RAAus instructors to meet the requirements of the new Operations Manual.

CAUTION

BEWARE

PROTECT YOURSELF

Currently, UPRT is NOT mandated or even regulated by CASA or RAAus, however ICAO and regulators world-wide have published specific guidance material.

At Strike Aviation training, we are committed to your safety. There are training providers who advertise UPRT but are NOT delivering the appropriate content that follows the recommended training.
